How To Buy Tires

Buying tires is about the most confusing thing there is this video will help you understand ways to look at tires so that you can understand what tire truly would be the best tire for you based on price and longevity of the tire. Legendary automotive in Fort Myers Florida is well known for helping customers fine tires and save money. If you’re looking to get tires mounted and balanced or a tire shop near me look no further.

How do you find the right tires for your car all tires are these like black rubber round things right um sure they have different lettering on the side but when you have these two different kinds of tires and there’s like a 200 difference in price like what’s going on there well rating tire quality when it comes to tires i like to use the analogy of sneakers you can go to walmart and buy like a generic pair of sneakers or you can go to a specialty shoe store and purchase a name brand pair of sneakers is there a difference yes there is that pair of shoes you buy at walmart will not last as long as the specialty name brand shoes the trouble though in comparing tires is that there’s no government mandated standard for tire quality which means the quality of the rubber there are soft tires and there are hard tires the manufacturers rate their tires on what is known as the utqg number or the uniform tire quality grading number this number is a comparison applied to tires excluding winter tires we’ll get to that a little bit later so as a buyer you can make an informed decision about what tires you want the unfortunate fact about the utqg number is that tire manufacturers grade the tires themselves as i mentioned before there’s no standardized quality grading system and all the manufacturers are not required to follow so even so you can use these numbers to help you decide which tires to buy if you research specific tires online you’ll find their utqg number which will be anywhere from zero to seven hundred the higher the number the harder the rubber in the tire and the longer the tire will last now there’s another aspect to this and this is climate in certain climates and conditions you’ll want softer rubber for example harder rubber has like less grip on the road and suppleness and in colder climates you’ll have less traction because you know the rubber will be stiffer on the road so the tires made for cold climates are you know quite soft so that the rubber won’t change characteristics in freezer freezing temperatures other times more dense rubber will become harder as the temperature drops now since we’re in florida at least where this is being videoed however so it’s not something you need to worry so much about snow tires right other characteristics to consider though in addition to the uniform i’m sorry we’ll just go utqg number tires have different treads and tread patterns and these are applied to the climate that you’re driving in some clear water better than others some are generally for dry pavement and yet others are made for driving and softer sand and dirt so where not to buy tires um as you can see there’s a lot of information to consider when buying tires and unfortunately many people making their purchases from tire stores um that are part of a chain and these chains make great deals with tire manufacturers to purchase tires at deep discounts and often they get huge kickbacks for selling high volumes of particular brands therefore they’re going to offer you a choice of tires that are not necessarily the best for you um but uh will be most profitable for their store and they carry only specific brands so where you also run into the untrained salesperson in a tire store he simply looks in the back to find out what’ll fit your car the danger there is you can end up with a tire that lasts half as long and costs twice as much as the tire you really need based on the driving you do so that’s where not to buy where to buy to find the right tires you should check out an auto repair shop that is skilled at working on cars but also skilled at tire services and here’s how to know if they’re going to help you find the right tires they’re going to ask you how much do you drive your vehicle they’re going to ask you uh where you drive like what the conditions are how many miles a year you drive they’re going to ask other similar questions like that and why would the salesperson ask you questions like these because it’s the way they’re going to figure out what kind of tire you truly need in terms of the utqg number and the tread um if they’re not asking questions they will present you with two or three choices and the prices will vary by maybe 20 or 40 dollars a tire and this is unacceptable because you’re just left with three choices one two or three without really understanding the difference and if these are the tires that you don’t actually need you’re going to be in the similar situation so um really your best advice you know like this a shop like legendary automotive is going to ask these questions they’re going to look around not just at the brands but at the different options they’re going to find the best option for you and your tire that provides the highest treadwear rating number based on the driving that you do and your needs if you don’t have a shop like legendary automotive near you there are some great tire sites online for comparing tires and you can also research and make a decision that way but who has time for all that isn’t it easier just to deal with a shop you can trust to help you make the right tire decision based on your driving if
